How This Calculator Works

The result uses a simple transparent formula so you can verify each step yourself. First, your entered weight is converted into grams. Second, the selected purity is converted into a decimal. Third, we calculate silver spot per gram from the current troy-ounce silver spot. Finally, all values are multiplied together:

melt value = weight in grams × (purity/1000) × (silver spot / 31.1035)

This means a 100 gram sterling item (925 purity) at a silver spot of $69.56/ozt would calculate as:

100 × 0.925 × (69.56 / 31.1035) = $206.97

Because buyers often pay below full melt, the table above also shows 70%, 80%, and 90% payout scenarios. These bands are not promises, but they help you benchmark offers from pawn shops, refiners, and local buyers.

When to use this value

Use melt value as your baseline for raw metal worth. If you are valuing signed jewelry, antique flatware, or branded items, collector and resale value may be higher than melt. For damaged or unsellable pieces, offers may be closer to scrap payout percentages.

Unit conversion reference

This calculator supports common silver-weight units used by consumers, collectors, and dealers:

  • 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams
  • 1 avoirdupois ounce = 28.3495 grams
  • 1 pennyweight (dwt) = 1.55517 grams

Troy ounces are standard in bullion markets. Avoirdupois ounces are common on kitchen and postal scales. If your scale does not specify, confirm unit mode before entering values to avoid over- or under-estimation.

How to use this value in real transactions

For selling scenarios, treat melt value as a benchmark rather than guaranteed cash outcome. Buyers often pay below melt to cover refining, risk, and business overhead. The 70/80/90% table above helps you estimate typical payout bands.

For buying scenarios, melt value helps identify listings that are sharply overpriced relative to raw metal content. That said, design, rarity, and maker reputation can justify meaningful premiums over melt.

For inherited pieces, start with this calculator to build a documented baseline before deciding whether to sell as scrap, consign as jewelry, or seek formal appraisal.

FAQ

Does this include stones, labor, or brand premiums?

No. This output is metal melt value only.

Why is my cash offer lower than the calculator?

Most buyers pay a percentage of melt, not full melt, to account for processing and margin requirements.

Can I use this for non-925 silver?

Yes. Choose the purity that matches your item, such as 800, 900, 950, or 999.

How often does spot data update?

The site polls upstream spot data approximately once per minute and then serves it through `/api/price.php`.

Use cases by audience

Individual sellers

If you are selling personal jewelry, this calculator helps set a realistic expectation before you visit buyers. Bring a printed or saved result with timestamp to support negotiations.

Estate organizers

For inherited collections, run each marked piece through a consistent workflow and log output in a spreadsheet. This creates traceable valuation notes for family discussions and decision-making.

Resellers

For sourcing decisions, quick melt checks can prevent overpaying in mixed lots. If a listing has unclear marks, apply a conservative purity assumption until confirmed.

Responsible interpretation checklist

  • Confirm you selected the correct unit from your scale.
  • Use verified purity whenever possible.
  • Treat non-USD outputs as convenience conversions.
  • Refresh spot before closing any transaction.
  • Differentiate melt baseline from collectible premium.

This checklist keeps the calculator useful in real transactions and reduces avoidable valuation errors.
